The 2011 Chengdu Biennale will be held at the East Chengdu Music Park and Industrial Civilization Museum from September 30 to October 31. With a theme of “Holistic Realm: Garden City,” our exhibition will showcase an urban fabric as a collective stormwater collection and distribution system that sustains landscape and parks in the city of Tianjin. The project is a collaborative research and design project by 14 graduate students at UC Berkeley under the instruction of Renee Chow.
About the project: In the heart of Tianjin is a 200 hectare site of unusually low density and with little new development. Although historically preserved and marketed as a tourist attraction, Wudadao (Five Main Streets) is under enormous pressure to be redeveloped. To revitalize the district, the graduate research studio in architecture worked with the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute to design the district perimeter as a high-density, mid-rise transition between the historic fabric and the high-rise city that surrounds it.
