Mulford-Marina Library
San Leandro, California

To the east and south, this branch library is bounded by two heavily trafficked streets. As a result, while the public entrance faces the southern street, the design strategy places a garden at the “rear,” northern side of the site for a cooler microclimate and to provide refuge from the traffic and its noise.

Both entries, from the street and the garden, are organized by the reference and check out desk. The library has a simple section that also opens to the north, tying the reading room of the library to the garden as an outdoor reading area. This branch library accommodates adult, teen and children’s reading areas, a meeting hall and other auxiliary activities
